Questions, answered.
Do we need internet for Bethvault to work?
No. Bethvault runs on the host Mac and serves your team over the local network. A router with no internet connection at all is enough. You only need internet to download the app in the first place.
What kind of Mac do we need to host it?
An Apple Silicon Mac: any M1, M2, M3 or M4 model running macOS 12 Monterey or later. Intel Macs aren't supported. Only the host needs to meet this; the rest of the team can join from any device with a browser, including Windows laptops and phones.
Does everyone need to install something?
Only the host Mac runs the app. Everyone else opens a link in whatever browser they already have, on any device. There's nothing to install and no account to create.
What happens if the Wi-Fi drops during an upload?
Uploads are chunked and resumable. When the connection comes back, the transfer continues from the exact point it stopped instead of starting the file again.
Where are our files actually stored?
In a normal folder on the drive you choose: internal, external or network. You can open it in Finder any time. Bethvault organises files; it doesn't hide them.
How many people can use it at once?
A typical setup comfortably handles around 15 people on the network at the same time: a couple uploading finished sets while everyone else browses and downloads. The practical limit is your Wi-Fi, not the app: we recommend a Wi-Fi 6 router and, ideally, the host Mac on Ethernet so uploads don't compete with everyone else for airtime.
Can editors delete or rename our files?
Only if you allow it. Uploading, downloading and creating folders are always on; move, rename and delete are switches the admin controls.
How to install
Four steps, one of them odd.
Bethvault isn't notarized by Apple yet, so macOS will claim the app is damaged the first time you open it. It isn't. That message appears for any app distributed outside the App Store without a paid Apple certificate. Step three clears it.

Open the downloaded .dmg
Double-click Bethvault-latest-arm64.dmg in your Downloads folder.

Drag Bethvault into Applications
The window shows both. Drag the icon across, then eject the disk image.

Clear the "damaged" warning
Open Terminal (Spotlight Cmd Space, type "Terminal"), paste this line and press Return. Nothing visible happens, and that means it worked.
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Bethvault.app
This removes the quarantine flag macOS puts on anything downloaded from the internet. You only do it once, on the Mac that hosts Bethvault.

Open Bethvault
It starts the server and shows the address to share with your team. Only this Mac needs the app. Everyone else just opens the link.
